Good and Bad- All in one day.

May 13: Mother’s day driving from Memphis to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This was a great drive and a special one for us since we met with CD White, a reporter  in Eureka Springs. She is writing several different articles on the back roads of Carroll county and will also be reviewing our book.

We did drive some great country roads through Arkansas. I really didn’t know how varied this state was.

Today we had two time trials. Ed drove well and made our time. The speeds have been reduced and now we really have a chance to score on these regularities. You have to drive the specified distance and come in to the time control on the second. Every second off is a penalty. The first time we drove one of these, the speed was so high that we had no chance of competing on this part of the rally, now we do. It’s fun when you stand a chance.

OK, that was the good part, the bad part? Another accident. No one hurt this time, but serious damage to a beautiful Jaguar E-type, 1970. We think they will run tomorrow, the damage seems to be to the body only. We will see. I think we have another car out as well. At least for the rest of this day. It was the 1972 Porsche 911 ST. Don’t know their problem, but they had to be pushed off the start line at the time trial this afternoon. Cars have sure had their problems on this rally.

Tonight we are 1905 Basin Park Hotel hotel in the quaint town of Eureka Springs. No chain restaurants are allowed here! I wish we had more time to explore and photograph but we must be back on the road tomorrow.  It will be a very long 500 mile day to Dodge City, Kansas. We were there last year on the World Race 2011, even stayed in the same hotel.

On the road to Alaska,

About ejhowle23

Authors and adventurers, participated in the World Race 2011, an automobile rally from New York to Paris, crossing three continents and 14,000 land miles. Following much the same route as the setting for our debut novel, The Long Road to Paris. This blog describes our own adventures and challenges. And now you can follow our Bahamas sailing adventure that provides the setting for our second novel, Night Watch. Our rally, the African Safari Challenge, crossed five countries in South Africa in May 2014 and in 2015 we participated in the second Trans-American rally this time from Nova Scotia to San Francisco. Spring of 2016 we travelled 28 days around Australia with friends from previous rallies and in the fall participated in our most exhausting rally through Argentina, Chili and Peru- the Rally of the Incas. We were awarded the Against All Odds award. We're still not sure if this was for us or our car. Stewball never broke down and we hardly did. We will soon take on Iceland as a self-drive tour and in the fall of 2017 we will participate in the Odyssey Italia and then back to Africa for a do-over (almost) of the Africa Safari Challenge.
